Description
ZAO (deepfake): Neural networks now handle work that once demanded painstaking manual video editing, and a computer algorithm can do it instead. Zao, a deepfake app, shows this shift clearly, letting you place your own face into nearly any scene from a Hollywood movie without wrestling with the technical details of video processing. Not every user, however, welcomed the app.
Within just two days, Zao climbed to the top of the charts on China's App Store and on Android markets. It was developed by Momo, the company behind one of the country's largest dating streaming platforms. Zao builds in deepfake technology that swaps the face of an original character for another in a matter of seconds, although the underlying algorithm reportedly took several hours to train.
According to Bloomberg, however, the app may not be fully secure, since its privacy policy states that Momo can use the generated videos for its own purposes. The developers insist this clause is fairly predictable, as the data is needed to keep training the neural network.
