XCOM®: Enemy Within is a strategy game in which you battle a range of hostile forces, including aliens. Your success depends on how many soldiers you command and how well you carry out the objectives each mission sets. The game world is richly detailed, and you can use its surroundings to shape your tactics. Once a mission ends, new options open up for you to choose from and upgrade.

UNKNOWN OBJECT FALLING TOWARD THE LANDING ZONE

The game opens with a strange object plummeting toward a city. At first it looks inexplicable, but as crowds gather, a sudden green cloud of smoke bursts out and sends everyone nearby running. Several people are caught in the incident, and it becomes the reason a secretive organization steps in to deal with the threat. This is your opportunity to get near the aliens, who are, without question, your enemies.

You'll take on these enemies tactically by directing a squad of characters, each carrying specific weapons. The environments are finely detailed and beautifully crafted, drawing players into the experience. Like other strategy titles, the game uses an overhead perspective to survey the battlefield. Signs of alien activity appear on screen, so you'll need to keep a close eye on them and adjust your tactics accordingly.

DEFEAT THE ENEMIES AND COMPLETE THE MISSION

Every soldier you command in XCOM® carries a weapon, and you can send them to any spot on the map you judge to be important. A resource introduced in this game, Meld, should be a top priority. It's easy to spot in the first mission, and you'll need to bring a soldier over to collect it. Once that's done, you launch your attack on the alien forces.

You won't spot them right away, so you'll need to move your units carefully, and most players opt for safe spots to take cover. After a few turns the aliens reveal themselves, and only the characters standing near them can strike. Each character has an ability that lets them target enemies within a particular range. The red face icon on the right side marks the moment you get a chance to attack.

COMPLETE OBJECTIVES AND UPGRADE YOUR SKILLS

You'll want to make use of the many positions available in the XCOM® environment when attacking enemies. You can move freely within your range and use the available cover to stay protected. Each mission sets specific goals you must achieve, and once they're all complete, the battle ends. You'll also receive a rating based on your performance and the number of casualties you suffered.

After a mission, you may unlock new items to upgrade your characters, fresh research, or base-building options. You'll have a set amount of funds to spend, so if you're unsure what to pick, take time to study each option. You'll also discover new upgrades for your soldiers, most of them new abilities that help you in combat.
