The gameplay is demanding. Each skirmish starts with a set number of troops already placed on the map, but you can buy and deploy additional units depending on the funds you have. Once per round, you can take out a bank loan to help pay for your own small war. Many purchased units can join the fight right away, and this immediacy keeps the game moving at a brisk pace.

The built-in tutorial is limited and could use a better translation. It offers only a brief overview of the game, explaining what the on-screen buttons do, but it isn't especially hands-on or thorough given how intricate the gameplay is. Be prepared for a steep learning curve and to lose more than a few battles along the way, which is simply part of becoming a capable commander. The English translation is far from the worst I've seen, but it feels awkward, and key information is sometimes buried under clumsy sentence structure or confusing phrasing.

The visuals use a muted color palette that keeps units easy to tell apart. The battle animations are a fine tribute to Advance Wars, though grittier and more realistic in tone. Once you grasp the game's finer points, the controls are simple to learn and use, which makes the game very enjoyable to play.
