Wild Space is selective about who it appeals to. If you don't have a real passion for strategy games, resource gathering, and sci-fi space adventures, you may find it hard to get into this one.

Background

Earth in the distant future is running on empty. Energy and resources have run dry, and humanity could face extinction at any moment. The most pressing task now is to discover an abundant alternative energy source that can restore the planet's surface and meet basic human needs.

A special campaign has been launched. Astronauts, technicians, and engineers are dispatched to several planets that earlier research deemed feasible and relatively safe from a distance. Their mission is to study new mineral resources and find ways to harness them. Ultimately, they set out to build a new energy research outpost to replace Earth's depleted reserves.

Explore the surface and locate resources

In Wild Space, your job is to travel to alien planets beyond Earth in search of life. If no living creatures or traces of life exist there, you will become the first person to set foot on that world.

You'll begin by scanning a strange planet for signs of life. If life is present, hunt it down and learn who lives there. Ideally, though, you'll find a planet that has never hosted life. All the land there will be yours to freely explore, operate, and build upon.

An alien planet is always rich in resources, both useful and dangerous. Next, use probes to dig deep into various spots on the surface and look for signs of valuable deposits. Once you have reports on the surface structure and the names of the resources and minerals present, you'll move on to the next stage: resource extraction.

Mining is possible with many machines, but first try your hand at the simple tools you have on hand. From there, bring basic resources back to the base, process them into raw materials, and use those to build more advanced mining machines.

These new machines are deployed across the surface to exploit rarer resources. As mining operations grow busier, your efficiency climbs higher and higher.

Building a power station

Once you have significant resources in hand, your next job is to build outposts. The planet's surface map is laid out in a grid of hexagons. Use your existing resources to construct factories, install machines, lay reinforced concrete surfaces, and shape the next locations to build on. Each time you add a functional room, mining plant, storage system, or warehouse, simply fill a hexagon with the shape of the new infrastructure.

The ultimate goal is to create a large outpost focused on exploiting the planet's resources, serving as a research center for energy production for the entire world. The bigger the outpost, the stronger your mining capacity becomes, and scientific and technological research gains more chances to advance rapidly. As this progresses, energy production keeps growing. In the end, you could nearly create a new energy supply for Earth, which is severely depleted.

Throughout the game, make the most of Explorer booster items. They speed up your exploration of the planet, and certain outpost infrastructure details also shorten build times.

Construction strategy

With the planet's mineral locations in hand, you need to set up a suitable system in the right place. Consider the distance from the future outpost to the main mining areas, and watch out for obstacles in the terrain. Hexagonal cells within the same system also need a certain continuity to maximize the effectiveness of the entire energy network.

Also think ahead about the challenges this alien world may throw at you. Natural disasters and galactic storms can strike at any time and ruin an unfinished project. Build storm-proof barriers and make the roofs and ceilings as sturdy as possible, and keep each zone's activities separate so you can cut off damaged sections when needed.

All these calculations reflect each player's tactical mindset and long-term construction vision.
