Description
Wii Controller IME: Plenty of you have probably already discovered the great retro console emulators on Google Play. They can multiply the number of games on your device many times over, but playing them on a touchscreen can feel awkward. Missing real buttons? Here's how to hook up a PS3 or Xbox controller to your Android device. If you're a proud owner of a Nintendo Wii, you'll also learn how to pair the Wii Remote with your Android device.
Step 1: Locate the Wii Remote If the controller isn't where you usually keep it, ask your grandmother. Maybe she'll lend you hers.
Step 2: Download the app You can grab the Wii Controller IME app for a modest price of a couple of dollars.
Please note: This app won't work on HTC smartphones running the Sense UI. Sorry about that.
Step 3: Configure the app The first time you open Wii Controller IME, it will show a warning about needed changes. Don't worry, just tap OK. It will take you to a menu where you need to allow Wii Controller IME to be added as an extra keyboard layout. Nothing to be shy about, this is exactly how it's supposed to work.
Step 4: Connect the Wii Remote On the on-screen keyboard, tap the language selection icon. One of the default languages will be Wii Controller, so select it. Keep in mind that once you're done gaming, you'll need to reverse this step, or you won't be able to type anything.
Next, press and hold buttons 1 and 2 on the Wii Remote. The controller will enter search mode, and the Wii Controller IME app will cheerfully confirm when the connection is established.
Step 5: Play with the Wii Remote Every retro console emulator supports Bluetooth, so you can easily remap the buttons to suit you or keep the defaults. On one of the most popular emulators, the simply named Gensoid Yongzh, you'll need to enable Bluetooth support by going to the menu and ticking the "Use input method" option in the settings.
The developer of Wii Controller IME has promised to add support for the Wii Classic Controller soon.
Step 6: Wondering why you'd bother? You might ask, "Why go through all this?" For one, it's far more comfortable than touch controls. For another, it's just plain fun. As any tinkerer would say when asked why: "Because I can!" The author fondly remembers hooking up a portable PSP to a laptop to show its screen on a monitor, sending that image on to a plasma TV, and controlling everything with a DUALSHOCK 3 controller connected to the laptop via PS3. And the whole project was started just so he could play Pokémon on a Game Boy emulator.
