This easy-to-use app can help you get more standby time out of your device. WiFi Automatic automatically turns off your WiFi radio when it isn't needed, which helps reduce battery consumption.
You can also set it to switch WiFi back on automatically when you power up your device or when you arrive at a location you've specified (this requires a cell radio, so it won't work on WiFi-only tablets). The app can also periodically scan for nearby networks to connect to, and turn WiFi off again if no suitable network turns up. That way, you stay connected to your WiFi network whenever you're using the device.

A WiFi connection typically consumes less power than mobile data, so on a phone it makes sense to keep the WiFi radio active whenever a WiFi network is within range.
