You can drop by the in-game shop at any time, where you'll find plenty of interesting bonuses and upgrades for your hero. Various resources can be improved, and you can equip a wide range of guns. Some weapons are powerful enough to wipe out entire sections of fairly large locations.
Be sure to grab the hearts, since they grant you plenty of extra lives, and pick up first-aid kits to top up your health. You'll also enjoy being able to customize your character's look.
