Dong Thap province faces a number of tourism challenges, including limited infrastructure, a weak transport network, a narrow range of tourist products, uneven service quality, and too few places for fun and entertainment. Promotion and tourism publicity have also been underwhelming and not yet effective. According to the publicity material "Project on Developing Tourism in Dong Thap Province from 2015 to 2020" (attached to Official Letter No. 1803-CV/BTGTU, dated 29/05/2015, from the Department of Propaganda and Training of the provincial Party Committee), the goal is to steadily grow tourism into a key economic sector of the province. Currently, tourism promotion relies mainly on social networks, websites, television, mobile apps, and tourist maps. Walk through a bookstore or a map shop and you will find plenty of material introducing places, local specialties, and transport in Dong Thap or across Vietnam, yet carrying books, newspapers, maps, or printed documents while traveling is inconvenient for both domestic and foreign visitors. At the same time, Information Technology has advanced rapidly, especially social networks and search engines such as Facebook and Google. Searching for "Dong Thap travel" returns a large number of results across several pages on both platforms. The province also shares tourist information through its official websites: Dong Thap (dongthap.gov.vn), Dong Thap Radio and Television (thdt.vn), and Dong Thap Newspaper (baodongthap.vn), among others. Advertising and introductions to tourist sites and services have been featured in broadcast programs such as "Dong Thap Ready to Welcome Visitors," the Dong Thap tourism showcase at VITM 2016, and the Dong Thap Tourism Week meeting in 2017 in Ho Chi Minh City and Sa Dec. This form of promotion gives tourists more reliable information, but it also forces them to actively gather travel details from various sources such as TV and newspapers. Some travel agencies also hire tour guides, from inside or outside the province, to make trips easier, but this costs travelers a good deal of money and requires them to follow group rules, which takes away some of the freedom that comes with travel. Beyond group tours, travelers need up-to-date and accurate information on tourist locations, road maps, places to rest and relax, specialty dishes, and restaurant menus. Yet the current tourist information for Dong Thap is fairly scattered and not focused on any specific product. For this reason, research and development of applications (website and mobile) to support tourism promotion is genuinely meaningful for Dong Thap. This application removes the need for a printed guidebook, paper maps, or an old compass on the trip. Visitors can now explore Dong Thap province with nothing more than an internet-connected Android smartphone or mobile device, and travel across the entire province with ease.
