Once every piece is gathered, climb to the top of the screen to reach the next stage. Levels are built from multi-story brick platforms, with ladders and hand-over-hand bars that give you several routes through the stage. You can dig holes in the floor to trap guards temporarily, and you can safely walk over a trapped guard. If a guard carrying gold falls into a hole, the gold is left behind for you to pick up. Dug holes gradually refill, so a trapped guard who fails to escape in time is destroyed and respawns at a random spot at the top of the level. Unlike guards, your character cannot climb out of a hole on its own, and will die if the hole fills before escape is possible. Some floors contain trapdoors, which both you and guards can fall through, as well as bedrock that cannot be dug. You can only dig to the sides, never straight down beneath yourself. This makes planning essential: to dig a hole x blocks deep, you must first clear a gap at least x blocks wide, since each layer leaves fewer open spaces. The exception is digging while standing on a ladder or hanging from a bar, which lets you dig and descend one row at a time. Many levels rely on this technique. You begin with five lives, and each completed level grants an extra one. If a guard catches you, you lose a life and the level restarts. You can fall any distance without injury, but you cannot jump, and it is possible to trap yourself in a pit with no exit, forcing you to abort the level and lose a life. You can stand directly on a guard's head when it is stuck in a dug hole, which lets you walk over it. Contact can also happen mid-fall, since you run and fall faster than guards, and you can survive contact while a guard begins to move. Some levels require freeing a trapped guard by digging while standing on its head, then racing away as it climbs out. In a few stages, a falling guard can serve as a bridge to reach an otherwise inaccessible area. Be careful: starting a downward move while standing on a guard's head, or briefly touching its head during a fall, is fatal. Some levels let you lure guards into dead-end areas or trap them in clever ways. In certain stages you must liberate trapped guards, and in others you must get guards to collect gold pieces for you. Can you clear every level?
