Description
Spotify Lite is a slimmed-down take on the standard Spotify app. At just 15MB, it is far smaller than the regular Spotify on Android, which can take up to 85MB. That makes it a sensible choice for people with limited storage, and it runs on many older versions of the operating system. Its smaller footprint also means it tends to be easier on your battery than the standard version, while still working much like the main Spotify app.
The Interface Has Changed a Lot
True to its compact, lightweight nature, the Spotify Lite interface has been redesigned to feel much leaner. It still looks fairly familiar, but one difference stands out right away: the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen. Spotify Lite shows only Home, Search, and Favorites buttons, whereas the regular version offers Home, Browse, Search, Radio, and Library.
The Settings Menu Has Also Changed Significantly
The settings menu in Spotify Lite is also stripped back. The publisher has removed options such as volume level and audio quality. Instead, you can only check how much mobile data the app has used and how much storage space it occupies.
You can also set your own limit on Spotify Lite's monthly data usage, with options such as 500MB, 2GB, and 3GB.
Fewer Features
The standard version of Spotify gives you full access to detailed features, including offline mode, connectivity options, social features, filters, volume controls, and music quality settings. To suit low-cost phones, Spotify has cut back on these features and built Spotify Lite to better match those devices.
Music Playback Has Drawbacks
In the standard version of Spotify, you can select and play specific songs, and paying subscribers can download their favorites for offline listening. In Spotify Lite, almost all of that is gone. Whether you are a paid or free user, you cannot choose and download specific tracks. You can only listen to a mixed selection of songs, which is a major drawback of this version.
In my view, removing extras such as Car View or animations is a reasonable trade-off. Still, losing so much of the playback control is genuinely disappointing for anyone using Spotify Lite.
The Version Is Only Available in Some Countries
So far, Spotify Lite has officially launched in only 36 countries, mostly in regions where low-cost phones are common. These include parts of Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
I have used many Lite versions of apps, since the idea behind Lite is to strip out unnecessary, distracting features to save battery and storage.
