Ad Blocking

SmartTubeNext completely strips out banner promotions, pre-roll commercials, and mid-roll interruptions. It doesn't merely filter them; the application is built from the ground up without ad-rendering capabilities, guaranteeing that no promotional material slips through. As a result, whitelisting channels or opting into ads is not supported. SponsorBlock Integration

SmartTubeNext comes equipped with SponsorBlock functionality. According to the SponsorBlock project:

SponsorBlock operates as an open-source, crowdsourced utility and API designed to bypass sponsored portions within YouTube videos. […] The tool automatically jumps past known sponsor segments using privacy-focused queries. It can also bypass other non-essential sections, including channel intros, ending cards, subscription reminders, and non-musical breaks in music clips.

You can easily customize which segment types to skip straight from the preferences menu. Keep in mind that submitting new timestamps is not supported directly in SmartTubeNext, as TV remotes are impractical for frame-accurate tagging.

Screen Casting

Casting streams from your smartphone or tablet requires manual pairing with your television. Unlike the standard YouTube client, SmartTubeNext will not automatically broadcast its presence across the local Wi-Fi network. Follow these simple steps to pair your mobile device:

1. Launch SmartTubeNext and navigate to Settings
2. Select the “Link Devices” option (second entry)
3. Open YouTube on your mobile device, then head to Settings > Watch on TV
4. Choose “Link with TV code” and input the numbers displayed on your TV screen

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Mode

SmartTubeNext can play videos in Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode. To turn it on, go to Settings > General > Background playback > Picture in picture. While a video is playing, pressing Home will switch it to PiP mode, and so will pressing Back if that option is enabled under Settings > General > Background playback (activation).

Change Playback Speed

You can change the playback speed by pressing the speed indicator icon (gauge) in the player's top row. The speed you choose is remembered for future videos. Some speeds may cause dropped frames, which is a known issue.

Voice Search

To enable global voice search, you need to install an extra companion app alongside SmartTubeNext. This bridge app intercepts the system's attempts to open the original YouTube app and opens SmartTubeNext instead. For this to work, the original YouTube app must be uninstalled. We know that's inconvenient, but you can always reinstall it later if you change your mind. The bridge app won't appear in your launcher and can't be opened directly; it's only used internally by the system's voice search. On some devices, you'll need to say "YouTube" explicitly when searching (for example, say "YouTube cute cats" instead of just "cute cats").

On Amazon Fire TV, follow these steps to enable voice search support:

1. Uninstall the original YouTube app (no root required on Amazon Fire TV Stick)

On all other Android devices, root access is required to enable this:

1. Root your device (search for a guide specific to your model)
2. Uninstall the official YouTube app using root (ADB shell pm uninstall com.google.android.youtube.tv)
