This is an unofficial port of Sil, based on the original project at http://www.amirrorclear.net/flowers/game/sil/. About Sil: Sil is a computer role-playing game built around discovery and tactical combat. Its combat system is simple on the surface but deep in practice, offering plenty of choices. Should you wear heavy armour that makes you easier to hit but cuts the damage you take? Should you wield heavy weapons to get past an opponent's armour, or lighter ones for better accuracy and a higher chance of critical hits? The right answer depends on the situation and the kind of character you build. You can also retreat into shadowy corridors to pick off enemies one at a time, or sneak up on an opponent and catch them off guard. Sil is also one of the very few games that stays faithful to Tolkien's writings. Carefully researched, it drops many generic fantasy clichés and reveals a different kind of world. There are no wizards or priests, no plate mail or magic scrolls. Instead, it draws on the Norse sagas that inspired Tolkien, with warriors in gleaming mail singing songs of rage or sorrow as they fight. The world's magic is subtle yet powerful, consisting of songs of fear and binding rather than fireballs and teleportation. Sil belongs to the roguelike tradition of role-playing games. These trace back to Rogue, written before computers had graphics, which used symbols on the screen to show a dungeon full of monsters and treasure, randomly generated each time you played. Rogue also featured permanent death: you have only one life, so you must choose wisely or start over. It additionally had unidentified items whose powers you have to figure out yourself. Sil inherits all of these features, though it is far more advanced in many ways. Who will enjoy Sil? You will like Sil if you want a detailed, well-balanced role-playing game with a rich and intuitive tactical combat system. You will also appreciate it if you love Tolkien's works or simply want a role-playing game that feels less generic.
