That said, the microphones in smartphones are tiny and mainly built to pick up the full range of human speech, so they may not deliver highly precise sound level readings.

Even so, it delivers reasonably reliable readings. Simply open the app and set your device down on a flat surface to gauge ambient sound. Through the built-in microphone, it records noise volumes and visualizes the measurements on an intuitive time-versus-decibel chart.

Because microphone hardware varies significantly from one phone model to another, sound measurements can differ even in identical environments. The tool includes a calibration feature to resolve these discrepancies. To adjust your mic properly, move to an exceptionally quiet room and set the baseline reading between 4 and 5 decibels.
