The Rubik's Cube was invented by Ernő Rubik, a Hungarian professor of architecture, who named it after himself. It is a 3 × 3 × 3 multifaceted puzzle built from smaller cubes, with six differently colored faces and a central core. Its rules are surprisingly simple: you twist and rotate the cubes. The solutions, however, are highly challenging and intricate, which is why the Rubik's Cube has become one of the most popular toys ever made. Goal: Turn the faces of the cube so that all the pieces on each face share the same color. Step 1: Build a cross. Choose one of the six faces and form a cross using the edge pieces of that color. You do this by turning the other faces so that the edge pieces line up with the chosen color. Some pieces may need to be turned more than once before they sit in the correct position. Once the cross is complete, move on to the next step. Step 2: Complete the first layer. In this step, your aim is to make the top layer one solid color, such as green, yellow, or any other color you chose. Start on one side, work out the right order and orientation of the corner pieces, and then check that the edge pieces are in order too. It helps to begin with the edge pieces of the same color on top. Once everything is in place, the first layer is done. Step 3: Solve the middle layer. With the first layer finished, you move on to the middle layer. This step is a little more involved, because you must place pieces without disturbing the layer you have already solved. Start with the pieces on one side, turning and moving the other faces until those pieces are correctly placed. Then use that piece as an anchor to locate the next one. Repeat this until the middle layer is solved. Step 4: Orient the corners. The last step is to orient the corners of the cube. Focus on one corner at a time and turn the faces until it shows the required color. Keep adjusting until every corner is correctly oriented. When they all match, the cube is solved. Solving the Rubik's Cube can feel very difficult at first, but with a bit of practice and patience, you will soon get the hang of it.
