Description

Written by Albert H. Gates

Whether you see Resonance of the Ocean as a lullaby of the sea or a harmonious melody between people and the ocean, both views ring true. Solve gentle puzzles to craft musical instruments in this game, whose hand-drawn visuals come from a Japanese developer. Along the way, it will help you discover what beauty means through a traveler's eyes.

Introducing Resonance of the Ocean

Puzzle games have rarely looked this beautiful!

Hand-painted art as delicate as a breath

I never expected to find such a beautiful and pure game on my phone. Just looking at the graphics and the first screenshots, the first thought that comes to mind is, “This game is so lovely and innocent, it feels like it should be completely free (though it does offer some paid packages).” Its sacred-feeling drawings make you want to dive in right away, play it, experience it, and truly feel it.

You've played plenty of games and seen countless art styles brought to life on screen. Modern cartoons or classic Disney-era animation, Japanese anime with charming characters that have big round eyes and flowing hair, 3D models inspired by real people, black-and-white sketch animation, or digital art built on bold, solid lines.

Yet this is likely the first time you'll encounter a hand-drawn style that feels both dignified and oddly rough, like the one in Resonance of the Ocean.

Whatever the game's theme or gameplay, its free-spirited, soulful drawings invite players to explore its world and capture you at first glance. Its raw delicacy and natural, rustic charm still don't quite capture how beautiful this game truly is. Perhaps I see it differently than you do, and some will find it beautiful while others won't. But one thing is certain after seeing Resonance of the Ocean: this is a relaxing game with rare, romantic hand-drawn graphics.

The secret behind the 2D artwork in Resonance of the Ocean lies in its thin, light pencil lines, which sketch out a gentle landscape where people are just a small part of nature. The strokes are loose and unrestrained rather than precise, as if the artist lives a leisurely life and wanted to pour that spirit into this little game.

Beyond the beautiful 2D visuals, Resonance of the Ocean also features environmental effects. They're subtle but enough to stir your soul: grass and branches sway in the breeze, leaves drift through the sunset, and waves roll beneath your feet. Small yet beautiful, with a strong emotional impact. An effective sense of restraint.

Can you hear the waves and the birds chirping in the little forest? You'll also catch the sound of footsteps on rustling leaves and clear piano melodies drifting in now and then. Sound is another detail that plays a big part in this game's relaxing, chill atmosphere.

Resonance of the Ocean uses soft pastel tones for all of its details, furnishings, and visuals. The elements that need emphasis are colored in, while the rest is rendered in thin lines. The poetic feel comes from the blend of this pastel palette with the original linework. As you play, you'll quickly ease into a calm mood, finding yourself smiling softly as if standing before the wide blue sea and sky.

Background

You play as a little girl stranded on a deserted island. The place is completely empty, with no one living there. On the hill leading down to the sea, there is only a small house and an old-looking lighthouse.

You are lost and searching for a way to reconnect with the outside world. Desperate and unsure how to reach anyone, you suddenly hear a few voices echoing from far away. Those sounds drifting over the ocean and washing onto the island where you wander give you a glimmer of hope. If you could respond to those sounds on purpose, would the people making them notice your presence and sail over to rescue you back to the human world?

Think and act. Since you want to answer the sounds coming from the island, you'll need to create musical instruments matching the ones you hear. From there, your task is to guide the little girl as she searches the island and collects items scattered around it or washed ashore from the sea, then uses them to craft a variety of melodic instruments.

A relaxing puzzle game themed around crafting musical instruments

In terms of gameplay, Resonance of the Ocean is a casual blend of adventure and puzzle elements. Virtual control buttons appear below the screen, including a navigation button for movement and a button for picking up items and storing them in your inventory. If you collect more copies of an item than you can hold, the duplicates can be combined into another item or used to replace an existing one. Which choice to make depends on your crafting progress.

Castaway items you find on the island and along the shore include glass bottles, food cans, bamboo flute stalks, pieces of cloth, tree branches and more. The game gives you step-by-step guidance on combining these materials into musical instruments, so you won't need to worry about the crafting process.

What really matters in this game, and what will take up most of your time, is finding where the items are hidden and keeping enough of them in your inventory to build instruments. Resource management is at the heart of the experience.

The gameplay is simple, and moving around and interacting with objects feels effortless. Beyond solving puzzles, managing resources and crafting instruments, there is plenty of room to wander, explore the untouched beauty of the island and let the melodic soundtrack wash over you.
