Graphics

Red Bull Playgrounds features 3D graphics styled with toon shading and outlined borders. The environments are fairly simple in design, but the lighting is nicely balanced, making the game easy on the eyes.

The character models and animations are not especially impressive. Still, Red Bull Playgrounds offers character customization and a rich, attractive costume shop, which adds real value to its visuals.

Gameplay

Red Bull Playgrounds offers a unique and engaging style of play. You control a character performing stunts such as parkour, skateboarding and BMX cycling. Hold the button in the lower left corner of the screen to build speed, then release it to make your character jump. Once you reach a suitable height, press the forward or backward button to pull off smooth somersaults in the air. The more advanced the technique, the more points you earn. Bring your character safely to the finish line to complete the level.

Although these maneuvers look great and reward you well, you need to take care when attempting difficult tricks. If your character lands on their head, back, or any part of the body other than their feet, the attempt fails and you suffer a heavy penalty that erases all the points earned on that run.

Which modes can you play in Red Bull Playgrounds?

As noted above, Red Bull Playgrounds includes three game modes: parkour, skateboard and BMX. Each mode features different vehicles and a different set of tricks.

Parkour is an extreme sport centered on running, jumping, climbing and somersaulting. In Red Bull Playgrounds, your character moves across building rooftops. Forward somersaults are easier to land than backward ones, which take about one and a half times longer but award more points. The parkour terrain also includes many high spots where you can boost your score with a special technique followed by two forward somersaults or a single backward somersault.

Skate mode, as the name suggests, has your character riding a skateboard. Here, the action takes place in playgrounds with less demanding terrain. Forward flips are much harder to perform than backflips in this mode. Opportunities for double flips are also rare, since the skate levels are not very tall. Even so, you can pull off low flips near the ground to create surprising and visually striking moments.

BMX is the most accessible mode in Red Bull Playgrounds. While riding a BMX, you can lift into a wheelie before jumping, which makes additional backflips easier to achieve. As with skateboarding, forward flips on a BMX are more difficult than backward flips.

Build your own levels in Red Bull Playgrounds

One of the best features of Red Bull Playgrounds is the ability to design your own levels in all three game modes. The game provides small level pieces, and you can combine up to five of them to build your own course. Some pieces include terrain that lets the character jump, and you can attach skill cards to these spots. When the character lands on a spot with a skill card, they perform the matching technique and you earn extra points. Be aware that if you jump and somersault too early, the character will not be able to complete the special technique.

You can collect terrain pieces and trick cards from a variety of sources while playing. Trick cards grant different scores and can be upgraded. Some tricks let you perform a flip at the same time, while others require you to finish the trick before flipping. Study the terrain and tricks carefully and arrange them in the most effective order to maximize your score.

Practice makes perfect

In short, the gameplay of Red Bull Playgrounds is simple at its core. You have only two goals: perform many tricks to rack up high scores, and reach the finish line safely. Balancing these two goals is where the challenge lies. Play too cautiously and you will reach the finish but fail to earn enough points to complete the mission. Play too recklessly and your character may land "feet up in the air" before the finish line comes into view, costing you all your effort and leaving you with only the "Restart" button.

Mastering the various moves and unlocking new tricks is the secret to winning in Red Bull Playgrounds. There's also a handy quirk: even if your character face-plants after crossing the finish line, you still take the win. So go ahead and throw in a few flips just before the line to rack up some bonus points!
