An unofficial YouTube app for Android phones and tablets, built on SmartTube by yuliskov. Sign in with a short code, keep videos playing in the background, download them for offline viewing, and cast to SmartTube on your TV.

NewTube runs on SmartTube's core. The engine that communicates with YouTube, the account sign-in, and the SponsorBlock, DeArrow, and Return YouTube Dislike integrations all come from SmartTube. NewTube adds a touch-friendly interface, its own player, and offline saving. It is an independent project and is not endorsed by SmartTube's developer.

Features

Your account, in seconds

– Sign in once with a code and your subscriptions, history, playlists, Watch Later, and recommendations load straight from your account. – No microG, GmsCore, root, or patched app needed. – Signing in is optional. When signed out, YouTube still tailors your Home feed based on what you watch.

Keeps playing

– Background playback with the screen off, picture-in-picture, and a mini-player you can drag down while browsing. – Lock-screen and headset controls work as well.

Save for offline

– Choose a quality up to 1080p, or keep only the audio. – Saved videos play in the same player without a connection and show up in your gallery.

Less noise

– SponsorBlock skips sponsor segments. – DeArrow replaces clickbait titles and thumbnails. – Return YouTube Dislike shows estimated dislike counts. – Shorts are hidden from Home and Subscriptions.

Works with SmartTube on your TV

– Pair with SmartTube on the TV using its Remote control code. – Cast straight to a Chromecast from the phone (live streams and subtitles are not available in this mode). – Or use the TV's own YouTube app.

Everything else

– Up to 4K where the video and device allow, with codec choice. – Subtitles, including auto-translated tracks, plus caption style and size settings. – Playback speed from 0.25x to 2x, with finer steps. – Playlists: Play all, Shuffle, Save to playlist, New playlist, and a queue labeled "Playing from…". – Multiple accounts with a switcher, or none at all. – Picture-in-picture on Android 8 and later. – Comments and live chat, chapters, and dubbed audio tracks. – Playback that waits out tunnels and dead zones and resumes where it stopped. – English and Spanish interfaces.

Note

NewTube uses its own package name (io.github.aleixrodriala.arc), so it can be installed alongside SmartTube or the official YouTube app. You can keep it updated through Obtainium or simply by installing a newer APK over the existing one. Every APK is signed with the same key, and each release lists a SHA-256 checksum for every file.

How to Sign In

1. Open the You tab, tap the account row, then choose Sign in. NewTube displays a short code. 2. Tap Continue with Google. Google's own page will open, where you select your account and grant access. The page may mention a TV, since NewTube signs in the same way a TV app does. 3. Return to the app. Sign-in completes automatically.

Your password is entered only on Google's page and never inside NewTube. The login token is stored on your device and is never sent to the developer. You can revoke it at any time from your Google account settings.
