In terms of gameplay, NAM-1975 closely resembles classic arcade shooters such as Cabal, Dynamyte Duke, and Spinal Breakers. You command a soldier who patrols horizontally along the bottom of the screen, firing downward at foes with a targeting reticle. The camera advances steadily in a straight line at a fixed pace as you work through each stage. Enemies will begin pouring in from the screen's edges as the action intensifies.

Pressing the A button fires your currently equipped weapon. Holding A while shooting keeps the soldier planted in place, which makes lining up shots easier but leaves him more exposed. The B button detonates timed grenades, and pressing C together with the fire button lets you dodge and weave out of danger. As you advance and destroy enemies, structures, and other obstacles, the game reveals collectibles such as unique weapons, extra ammunition, and score bonuses. You also have the chance to rescue female hostages along the way and fight alongside them.
