Description
Microsoft Authenticator lets you sign in to all your online accounts easily and securely through multi-factor authentication, passwordless access, or password autofill. It also gives you extra account management tools for your Microsoft personal, work, or school accounts.
Getting started with multi-factor authentication Multi-factor authentication (MFA), also called two-factor authentication (2FA), adds a second layer of protection to your logins. After you enter your password, you'll be asked for one more way to confirm it's really you. You can either approve the notification sent to Microsoft Authenticator or type in the one-time password (OTP) the app generates. Each one-time code stays valid for a 30-second countdown, so you never have to reuse a time-based one-time password (TOTP) or memorize a number. One-time passwords work without an internet connection and won't drain your battery. You can add several accounts to the app, including non-Microsoft services such as Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox, Google, LinkedIn, GitHub, and more.
Getting started with passwordless sign-in Skip the password and use your phone to log in to your Microsoft account. Just enter your username and approve the notification on your phone. Your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN adds a second layer of protection in this two-step verification process. Once you've signed in with two-factor authentication (2FA), you'll have access to all your Microsoft products and services, including Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and more.
Getting started with autofill Microsoft Authenticator can also fill in passwords for you automatically. To start syncing your passwords, including those saved in Microsoft Edge, sign in with your personal Microsoft account on the Passwords tab inside the app. You can set Microsoft Authenticator as your default autofill provider so it fills in passwords for the apps and sites you use on your phone. Passwords in the app are protected by multi-factor authentication, so you'll need your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN to view or autofill them on your mobile device. You can also import passwords from Google Chrome and other password managers.
Microsoft personal, work, or school accounts Your work or school may ask you to install Microsoft Authenticator before you can access certain files, emails, or apps. To do so, register your device with your organization through the app and add your work or school account. Microsoft Authenticator also supports certificate-based authentication by issuing a certificate to your device. This tells your organization that the sign-in request comes from a trusted device, letting you access additional Microsoft apps and services securely without logging in to each one separately. Because the app supports single sign-on, once you've verified your identity, you won't need to log in again to other Microsoft apps on your device.
Optional access permissions: Microsoft Authenticator includes the following optional access permissions, and all of them require your consent. If you decline them, you can still use Microsoft Authenticator for other services that don't need these permissions. For more information, visit https://aka.ms/authappfaq Accessibility Service: Optionally enables autofill on more apps and sites. Location: Some organizations need to check your location before granting access to certain resources. The app requests this permission only if your organization has a policy that requires it. Camera: Used to scan QR codes when you add a work, school, or non-Microsoft account. Read the contents of your storage: Only used when you report a technical problem through the app settings. Some storage information is collected to help diagnose the issue.
