Description
Mahjong is a tabletop game with roots in China, where it took shape in the late 19th century. Played by four people, it challenges players to assemble suits, numbers and winds to claim victory, and it has gained a loyal following around the world, particularly across Asia. Though it is a fiercely competitive pastime, it is equally enjoyed as a social gathering. Mahjong is generally thought to have grown out of card games played in the Guangdong and Fujian regions of southern China. Its earliest forms likely developed from earlier card games, and by the late 1800s and early 1900s it had spread throughout China and onward to Japan and other parts of Asia. Today, the game exists in many variants, each with its own rules. A standard four-player set consists of 144 tiles, divided into three suits: bamboo, characters and dots. Each suit contains tiles numbered 1 through 9, with four copies of every tile. Wind and flower tiles are also included; they carry no numbers but hold special significance during play. At the start, each player is dealt 13 tiles. Players then take turns drawing a tile from the wall and discarding one, working to arrange their hand into winning combinations. These combinations, known as melds, include sequences (three consecutive tiles), pungs (three identical tiles) and kongs (four identical tiles). Success in Mahjong depends on sharp observation, careful calculation and strategic thinking, along with a fair measure of luck. Beyond being a pastime, it encourages conversation and helps people build friendships. It is also a serious competitive sport, with tournaments held regularly in many parts of Asia.
