Gameplay
Two key factors shape the game. The first is your hero: every character is unique and comes with a distinct set of abilities, although general skills are also available, which we'll cover shortly. Paying attention to the islands is just as important, since there are several types. Green islands give you bonuses, contain no enemies, and often let you heal, collect gold, or receive a defense boost.
Red islands work quite differently. They frequently hold bonus gold, but claiming it means defeating an enemy. The alternative is often no easier, as you'll still have to fight, though the enemy will deal less damage. Finally, black islands trigger random events: you might gain gold and lose health, or restore health at the cost of your gold, and there are plenty of other possibilities.
Before setting off, you'll need to pick the hero you want to play as. The selection isn't huge, but as noted earlier, each hero has a unique skill set, so every one requires a different playstyle. The Witch Doctor, for example, can drain an enemy's health or restore her own, yet she's not especially strong in combat. The Mercenary, on the other hand, thrives in battle and earns gold for every enemy he defeats.
Game Features
Building your own deck is straightforward: open the editor and assemble it, while staying within the minimum and maximum card limits. You'll find both general and specialized cards. Keep an eye on card costs too, since some require gold while others cost health.
If you think gold doesn't matter, think again: points are awarded according to the gold you collect during a match, so the more you hoard, the higher you climb in battle. To unlock new cards, collect special barrels and open them in the dedicated menu.
The game is quite challenging and may take some time to master, but it's incredibly engaging and feels a bit like chess, since you have to plan your moves ahead and watch for your opponent's mistakes. When an enemy is eliminated, their gold is split among the remaining players. And if bot opponents get boring, you can always challenge real players for an even tougher experience.
