Description

Into the Breach is set in a far-off future where humanity is locked in a struggle against a swarm of gigantic monsters called the Vek. You pilot powerful mechs that you can outfit with a broad range of weapons, armor, and accessories to take the fight to the enemy. Combat is turn-based, letting you organize your squad's moves in response to enemy actions, while the Vek telegraph their attacks ahead of time.

Each battle has you commanding three separate mechs against the Vek. Before every fight, you receive a briefing on the map's mission along with a set number of turns to complete it. Extra objectives may be offered, but the core goal of each map is always the same: protect the civilian buildings that supply the power grid keeping your mechs running. If any civilian structure is damaged or destroyed, the power grid weakens.

At the end of every turn, the Vek advance across the board and attack. For each Vek unit, you can see how many tiles it can move, its current health, and the direction it plans to strike. New Vek then emerge after each round. On your turn, you can reposition each mech and fire one weapon to kill a Vek, push it off its line of attack, block an incoming strike, intercept newly spawned Vek, or stop an assault on civilian infrastructure.

Mechs can only withstand so much damage before they are knocked out of action, though you can choose to have a mech skip its turn to repair some of that damage. Otherwise, all damage is fully restored between levels. Pilots who destroy Vek earn experience points, which can be spent on new abilities. Into the Breach has often been compared to chess, as it focuses less on crushing the enemy outright and more on controlling position and sacrificing units to gain a stronger advantage.
