Hidey Hole is an app that gathers wallpapers designed for the Samsung Galaxy S10 series (S10, S10e, and S10+), especially those built to hide or work around the camera cutout. It cannot be used with other devices.

Wallpapers are submitted by other users, and I have no direct control over the content.

Downloading wallpapers and setting them up is simple. You might wonder whether another wallpaper app is really needed, but I enjoy fine-tuning them. To make text easier to read, I lower the brightness a little. You can also adjust saturation and the contrast blackpoint.

The hole-shaped feature of these devices also caught my interest. I wanted to see whether I could detect camera positions in code and scale images for different models. The cutouts don't line up exactly, and the mismatch becomes obvious when an image made for one model is shown on another (an out-of-sync hole). It works well on the S10 and S10e, but the S10+ still leaves a bit to be desired.

Because the algorithm is generic, it is easy to extend support to other devices. That idea was what inspired me to build this.

For example, the S10's cutout is slightly shorter than the S10+'s. When you use an S10 image on it, you will still see the curve of the missing pixels below your cutout. The realign/scale function zooms in on the image slightly and then offsets it so the holes line up.

Notifications

The scraper pulls images from subreddits that a post links to. Reddit and Imgur are not supported at the moment. The minimum width is 640 pixels.

I may add comment scraping to the list in the future, but it is not currently available.

The post flair determines the category wallpapers are placed in.

Many recent photos include your phone's frame. These images look great on the device they were made for, but they do not scale well to other devices. They don't look very good in my opinion, but you are free to ignore them.

Motion effect

The motion effect does not work well with Hidey Hole wallpapers, and the app cannot adjust this setting. To disable it, use one of Samsung's wallpapers from your home screen, turn off the motion effect, then return to using Hidey Hole.

You can do it! Run adb shell settings put system wallpaper_tilt_status 0 to try it yourself.
