Together they developed the technology needed to build this ship, and at one point they even created an artificial intelligence surpassing their own abilities. Yet whatever happened to them, they now survive only as scattered traces in history, lost to the far reaches of time. They had perished long before any of us were born, and not a single survivor remains.

Why did they choose to build this particular ship? Perhaps they once dreamed of leaving the galaxy of their birth to spread across a more distant one. Or perhaps they simply wanted to leave some trace of their existence, so that future civilizations could learn how they loved, lived, and died.

So much time has passed that we can never truly know their intentions; all we can do is speculate, and speculation is hardly a reliable guide. Still, when we reflect on these fading memories, a deep sense of melancholy washes over us, doesn't it?
