When shooting outdoors, camera optics rarely capture the full beauty of a landscape without cropping away part of it. Indoors, you often can't step back far enough to cover the whole space. In these situations, you can either take several frames or use special optics such as a fisheye lens. A panorama is the ideal solution in such cases.

On mobile devices, panoramas are usually shot using one of two methods:

– Sweep panorama: the camera records continuously while you rotate it slowly and smoothly to capture the whole scene. – Pan-and-shoot panorama: you take several separate frames, shooting, rotating, shooting again, and so on.

Both approaches have their drawbacks.

With sweep panorama, the capture actually happens in video mode, so the panorama's height is capped by the device's maximum video recording resolution (1280 pixels on most mobile devices). It also struggles in low light, because the camera is always moving and each frame needs a relatively long exposure, which makes sharp results hard to achieve. On the other hand, on devices without a gyroscope, sweep panorama usually produces better stitching results.

The pan-and-shoot method can capture panoramas at the highest resolution, limited only by the free memory on your device. If the device has a gyroscope, you can rotate the camera quickly from one shot to the next. This method also lets you choose the most suitable focus mode: autofocus, focus at infinity, or continuous focusing.

HD Panorama supports both shooting methods.

A common challenge when shooting panoramas is keeping the camera perfectly oriented. Otherwise the horizon line gets distorted and the frame sequence develops a curve, leaving only a narrow strip in the final stitched image. HD Panorama includes augmented reality guides that clearly show how to orient the camera for the ideal result. With these guides active, it is practically impossible to capture a frame that falls outside the panorama's line of sight.

HD Panorama stitches frames while accounting for differences in lighting between shots and for moving objects within the scene. It preserves the scene's dynamic range as fully as possible and minimizes ghosting caused by moving subjects.

If you are a professional photographer, HD Panorama lets you save the original captured frames so you can stitch and fine-tune them later on your personal computer.

HD Panorama borrows some interface elements from the Google Camera app under the Apache license, for ease of use. Its processing relies on Almalence's proprietary algorithms, which makes a dramatic difference in output quality, including the highest achievable resolution and dynamic range.
