English Bhagavad Gita Overview
It lays out, in clear terms, the nature of consciousness and how the self, the universe, and the divine are related. It is often considered the essence of India's spiritual wisdom. The Bhagavad Gita is traditionally regarded as the 5th Veda, composed by the ancient Indian sage Vedavyasa, and it forms part of the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata. Lord Krishna first delivered its teachings to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.
Known simply as the Gita, the Bhagavad Gita is an ancient Sanskrit scripture of 700 verses that forms a key part of Dharmic tradition. It presents a dialogue between the Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide Krishna, covering a wide range of philosophical questions.
Overcome with despair as he faces a war against his own kin, Arjuna turns to his charioteer Krishna for guidance on the battlefield. Through the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna teaches Arjuna the paths of devotion and the principle of selfless action. The Gita carries forward the core ideas and philosophical traditions of the Upanishads, yet it blends dualism and theism, a notable contrast to the strict monism of the Upanishads.
Countless commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita have been written, each offering its own interpretation. The earliest well-known one is the eighth-century CE commentary by Adi Shankara. Many scholars read the Gita's battlefield setting as an allegory for the moral and ethical struggles within every person. Leaders of the Indian independence movement, including Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, drew inspiration from the Gita's call to selflessness.
