Description

Domino, a puzzle game built around dominoes, started in China and has since spread across the globe. It is easy to pick up yet rich in strategy, which makes it a favorite among players of every age. A standard Domino set contains 28 tiles, and each tile is split into two squares, each marked with a number of pips from 0 to 6. When the game begins, the tiles are dealt out to the players at random, and any tiles left over are set aside as a boneyard. Players take turns laying tiles down and joining them together so that the pips on touching ends match. For instance, a tile showing 3 pips can only be linked to a tile that has a 3 on one of its halves. Each turn, players place tiles in legal spots on the table to lengthen the chain. The aim is usually to get rid of as many tiles as possible and to build chain reactions cleverly enough to finish with the highest score once the round is tallied. The game tests a player's strategy and planning, but chance plays a part too, since the random deal can shape which moves are available and how decisions unfold. When placing a tile, players weigh several factors, such as how to make the best use of the tiles in their hand, how to block their opponents' options, and how to earn a bigger score through a well-judged chain. Domino comes in many variations, including traditional linear play, scribble play, and square play, each with its own rules and tactics. The game also adapts to different player counts, from head-to-head matches for two to team play with several participants. Beyond being an enjoyable pastime for families and friends, Domino is also featured in competitive tournaments at home and abroad, where skilled players display their talent and tactics in fierce contests that draw plenty of spectators.
