Turn your Android phone into an AIS display and receiver with Boat Beacon, a marine AIS ship tracking app that offers real-time collision detection. You can also share your own boat's position with other AIS users online.
Boat Beacon is built specifically for use on the water. It plots every ship around you on a chart and both transmits and receives AIS data over the internet. It is the only app that continuously monitors CPA and warns you when a possible collision is detected.

Sends and receives AIS ship information in real time over the internet. No VHF AIS receiver, transponder, or antenna is needed.
The app runs continuous Closest Point of Approach calculations to detect potential collisions and alert boats at risk.
It shows bearing and distance to other vessels along with AIS details such as speed, course, location, name, and length. A track line displays your boat's most recent voyage.
You can share your location, speed, course, and destination. Others can follow you through Boat Beacon, our free companion app Boat Watch, and major online AIS services like MarineTraffic or ShipFinder. When Transmit is enabled, it keeps running in the background.
Explore the live map with a compass overlay that rotates as you turn, making it easy to spot ships by their direction. Tilt the map into a 3D view by sliding two fingers upward with one hand.

Boat Beacon lets race crews track every participating team with real-time position updates. You can also follow the action in the Clubhouse on large screens using Boat Beacon's TV/Video Out support.
Works with VHF AIS and RTL-SDR through the AIS Share app.
Supports local NMEA AIS over USB and Wi-Fi.
Boat Beacon requires an internet connection to work. Most popular coastal areas in the US, UK, and other countries have mobile data coverage (2G or higher) reaching 12 miles or more offshore.

An Android smartphone or tablet with GPS
An internet connection
Boat Beacon is available to everyone. However, to appear on global AIS services such as MarineTraffic, ShipFinder, or AIS Hub, you need an MMSI number. If your boat doesn't have one, you can get a free MMSI in the US through the USCG-approved agent at http://www.boatus.com/mmsi using their online form. You can also email us to request a free MMSI number for internet use.
Keep in mind that GPS running continuously in the background can significantly reduce battery life.
AIS ship data comes from a network of voluntary shore-based stations, so some regions may not have coverage.
Note: This is not an AIS transponder. Other ships will only see you if they receive data from the same land-based AIS networks.

How to install
