Diamonds may be precious jewelry to some people, but to gamers they stir up a whole sky of memories. Years ago, Bejeweled introduced its simple yet addictive gameplay and quickly became a household name in the gaming world. Today, I'd like to walk you through a game from this same family, called Bejeweled Classic. It's a simple offline puzzle game filled with colorful, sparkling gems, and in 2020 it earned a place in "The Strong's World Video Game Hall of Fame."
Introducing Bejeweled Classic
Bejeweled Classic is an easygoing puzzle game built around matching jewels, much like Candy Crush Saga or Jewel Legend. It is currently free to download, has passed 10 million installs, and has collected a large number of positive reviews. It's an entertaining and relaxing experience for players of all kinds.
Gameplay
Bejeweled Classic sticks to the classic formula, so its gameplay is about as straightforward as it gets. Each level presents a board of gems in many different colors, scattered across a grid of cells that resembles a chessboard. To play, you swap a gem with one of its neighbors, aiming to line up at least three gems of the same color in a row or column. Those matched gems vanish and turn into points. In classic levels, reaching a set score target is all it takes to move on to the next stage.
Beyond the classic mode, Bejeweled Classic offers a variety of other game modes. Each one has its own rules, but they all share the same core gem-matching mechanic. The game usually features around five gem types in shapes and colors such as green, blue, red, yellow, and orange. Your score doesn't depend on a gem's color, so whenever you have the chance, go for the matches that earn you the most points.
How to score the most points
Bejeweled Classic includes many levels with strict conditions, such as a limited number of moves, a high score requirement, or a set time in which to earn as many points as possible. These rules push players to find smarter ways to rack up points. Based on the tricks I've picked up along the way, here are a few tips I often rely on.
First, study the level and think about its goal. Also, pay attention to the colors and positions of the gems. If the level only asks you to reach a certain score, play at a relaxed pace and treat it as a chance to practice your skills.
When a level limits your moves, plan carefully. Look for spots where two or three gems of the same color sit in a row or near each other. Focus on those areas first, along with the surrounding space. Clearing the gems that stand between matching pieces can set up satisfying combos and bring in unexpected bonus points.
Special gems
Bejeweled Classic also rewards players with gems that have special powers. You can create them by matching more than four gems of the same color. A set of four identical gems merges into a fiery gem. When you activate it in a combination, it triggers a powerful explosion that destroys nearby gems and earns you a good number of extra points.
When you match five or more gems of the same color, the game gives you a gem wrapped in lightning. It looks striking and packs a serious punch. Activating it sends electric bolts through its entire row and column, destroying every gem in both lines. The points you earn are even higher than from the fiery gem, making it one of the best ways to score big with a single move.
Modes
So far, Bejeweled Classic offers seven different game modes to choose from: Classic, Diamond Mine, Zen, Ice Storm, Poker, Butterflies, and Lightning. Each one follows its own set of rules:
- Classic: Score a set number of points to advance to the next level. Some stages add extra rules, such as time limits or move caps.
- Diamond Mine: A timed mode where you use gem explosions to break apart the surrounding rocks. Each stage you clear grants a little extra time.
- Zen: Similar to Classic, but with fewer rules and restrictions. You can play here without limits and enjoy the experience at your own pace.
- Ice Storm: Rising water columns appear in each column and gradually freeze as they climb to the top. Match gems to lower the water and break the ice. Matching gems in vertical lines is more effective than in horizontal ones.
- Poker: A mode that blends poker with Bejeweled Classic. Every time you make a match, a card is recorded. Once five cards are revealed, your score is determined. Try to earn as many points as you can, because surprises are waiting for you along the way.
- Butterflies: Certain gems transform into butterflies, and with every turn they move one step closer to the evil spiders. Pair them with tiles of matching color to set them free.
- Lightning: A time-pressure game mode. Special gems with timestamps appear above the board. Destroying these pellets extends your remaining time, so act fast, since these time gems don't show up non-stop.
