Anyone who has enjoyed a Battleship-style game such as Hasbro's BATTLESHIP will know how compelling this genre can be. Now imagine swapping warships on the open sea for sheep hidden in tall grass. Sounds delightfully odd, doesn't it? If that idea appeals to you, grab Battle Sheep and start playing today. It offers plenty of fresh and entertaining moments.

Introducing Battle Sheep

Battle Sheep is the debut title from developer Talonur Technologies, and it shows in the care put into every corner of the game. Its charming, eye-catching visuals are paired with gameplay that builds on the classic battleship formula and adds several new twists. Although it is a recent release, the sheep-filled fun of Battle Sheep is already set to draw a large crowd of players.

Gameplay

If you have played titles in the battleship genre, the basics will feel familiar. For newcomers, here is a quick rundown. Your goal in Battle Sheep is to work out where the opponent's sheep are hiding in a particular bush. The game lays out a meadow of bushes arranged in a grid, much like squares on a chessboard. You pick the bushes where your own sheep will hide. You and your rival then alternate turns trying to pinpoint each other's sheep, and the first player to uncover every sheep is the winner.

The rules may sound straightforward, and that simplicity is exactly what draws people in and keeps them coming back. Simple, however, does not always mean easy. Beneath the surface lies a surprising amount of strategy. Luck plays its part, but a poor setup can cost you the match even if you have found more sheep than your opponent by the final minutes.

Expand your sheep farm

Your farm starts out fairly small, so early battles are limited to 4-sheep matches against other players. Each win brings bonuses, and you can spend those rewards on additional sheep to grow your flock and join larger fights. At present, a single battle can feature as many as 15 sheep. More sheep means more bushes and more squares for you to search.

You are free to place your sheep in any square you like, and there are plenty of tactical layouts to experiment with, including L-shaped, diagonal, and vertical formations. Certain squares deserve extra attention from both sides, such as the corner squares and the central ones, since many players tend to guess those first.

The game also includes a shuffle option that randomly arranges your sheep, so you can skip the agonizing over placement and simply reshuffle until the layout feels right. Battle Sheep additionally offers boosters, helpful items you can use during a match. There are six of them, each with its own purpose. For instance, the lawn mower clears bushes in a vertical or horizontal row, while the scissors let you open any square without giving up your turn. Using them lets you explore more of the field and locate your opponent's sheep sooner.

Climb the leaderboards

When you join sheep battles in Battle Sheep, you face players from around the world in real time, so keep your internet connection steady. A dropped connection can cause your turn to time out and hand the match to your opponent. Losing is never fun, but losing that way is especially frustrating.

Keep in mind that a defeat also costs you sheep from your farm equal to the number of sheep in that battle, while a victory earns you the same number. Bigger battles carry more risk, but the rewards are worth it.

Every match you win earns you stars. Stars help you unlock boosters and determine your standing on the leaderboard. Climb the rankings to show off your strategy and prove that your sheep farm is the best around.
