It's an engaging battle system that's hard to ignore.

You steer your character with simple swipes and taps, moving freely to safe spots on the screen to arrange your formations and join the fight. Some locations also let you activate special features, each costing a certain amount of money to use. It's up to you to decide which priorities will help you defeat the enemy most effectively.

TAKE DOWN TOUGH ENEMIES

When you start Army Commander, you receive a set amount of gold and carry it along as you advance to the next location. You spend that gold on new bases, and once they're built, you won't have to worry about summoning reinforcements by hand. Characters keep spawning from those bases, and their numbers can grow over time as you prepare for battle.

Once your unit count is full, you launch the attack, and the two sides clash. You carry a gun to shoot enemies, but you also need to stay alive, since your character is vital to your army. You're also responsible for collecting the loot the enemy drops and spending it on growing your forces. You can move in to destroy each enemy group as you reach it.

You don't need to panic about wiping out every enemy in a single pass, since the number of units you can field is fairly limited. When a battle ends, you fall back to the area you control and wait for a fresh wave to fully appear before starting the next fight. As you destroy each enemy unit, the effect of their color shifts over time until only a single flagpole is left.

EXPLORE NEW BATTLEFIELDS

Army Commander presents a range of battles, and to unlock the next location, you must capture the flag from the previous one. Specifically, you need to reach the amount required to take that flag, which lets you spend money to increase your unit count. Once a level is complete, you advance to a new location where fresh elements appear to help you eliminate enemies faster.

Some stages introduce an exciting new tactic for quickly wiping out enemies: the atomic bomb. This bomb is pre-placed, and you must move to its switch to activate it. After a brief countdown, a portion of the enemy units vanish from the map entirely. The enemy force is weakened at that point, giving you a chance to push in and destroy them more quickly.

Players won't be able to take their eyes off the battles and the territories they need to capture:

• You're taken to a location packed with enemies guarding a flagpole, which you must capture to complete the level.
• Your main character collects money and heads to the right spot to build a base or activate certain features.
• Soldiers keep appearing until your squad hits its limit, and you decide when the fight begins.
• The battle only ends once you've captured the position, destroyed every enemy, and built enough strength to reach the flagpole.
• On certain levels, you'll find pre-placed equipment, such as atomic bombs, that can help you overcome large numbers of enemies.
