Game Objective and Basic Rules
Objective
In Argentine Trick, the goal is to win more rounds, called "tricks," than your opponents by playing higher-value cards. Four players usually compete in two teams, and each team races to reach a set score, typically 30, 40, or 50 points, depending on the regional version.
Basic Rules
The game is played with a 40-card Spanish deck, with the 8s, 9s, and jokers removed. Every card has a fixed rank and value. Players must follow the suit of the lead card when they can, and the highest card of the led suit takes the trick. If a player has no card of that suit, they may play any card, but it only wins the trick if it is a higher-ranking trump.
Hierarchy of Cards
From highest to lowest, the cards rank as follows:
- Espada (Sword) 1 – The top-ranking card.
- Basto (Club) 1 – Second highest.
- Espada (Sword) 7 – Third highest.
- Oro (Gold) 7 – Fourth highest.

How a Round Unfolds
How the Cards Are Dealt
Each player is dealt three cards, moving clockwise around the table. The dealer changes every round so that the role is shared fairly. Whatever remains forms the draw pile, which stays out of play for the rest of the round.
The Bidding Round
Bidding depends on how strong each player's hand looks. Bidding opens with the player seated to the dealer's left and moves clockwise. On each turn, a player can either pass or raise the current bid. Whoever makes the highest bid earns the right to name the trump suit and lead the first trick.
Playing Out the Tricks
The winning bidder opens the first trick by playing any card. Everyone else must follow the suit if they can. When they can't, they are free to play any card. The highest card in the led suit takes the trick, unless a trump card is played, in which case the highest trump wins instead.
How Points Are Scored
When a round ends, points are tallied from the number of tricks each side won, plus any bonuses earned by making successful bids. The totals are recorded, and play carries on until one team hits the target score needed to win the game.
Advanced Strategies
Tracking the Cards
Seasoned players keep a mental record of which cards have already been played. This lets them make sharper decisions and anticipate what their opponents are likely to do next.
Bluffing and Reading People
Bluffing is a key part of Argentine Trick. Players often bid or play in ways meant to mislead opponents about how strong their hand really is. Picking up on an opponent's habits and reactions can give you a real edge.
Working as a Team
In team play, communication and coordination matter a great deal. Partners need to back each other up with smart plays so the team wins as many tricks as possible. Subtle signals and a shared understanding of each other's style can make teamwork far more effective.
